Building the cities of the future: Green x Engineers Innovation Day

What does it take to build cities where infrastructure, mobility, energy, and design truly work together at scale?

Today, cities face increasingly complex challenges: growing sustainably, reducing emissions, improving urban mobility, and creating smarter, more connected systems. Technology and innovation have been accelerating this transformation, but their implementation continues to depend on collaboration between companies, startups, the public sector, and experts from different fields. This is where engineering plays a fundamental role.

It was precisely to discuss these challenges, and the solutions that are already gaining traction, that Engineers Hub and greenhub by Unicorn Factory Lisboa, in partnership with the Ordem dos Engenheiros - Região Sul, organized the Green x Engineers Innovation Day, bringing together more than 75 participants to discuss the future of cities and the role of engineering and innovation in creating more sustainable urban solutions, on May 26th.

At the event, Jorge Coelho (BABLE Smart Cities) helped participants understand the current state of smart cities globally by exploring what is already working in today’s cities and where urban innovation is headed. At the “Driving Connected Cities” roundtable, Cláudia Machado (Brisa Group), João Costa (Quadrante), Pedro Silva Monteiro (Critical Techworks), and Alan Augusto (REMO by Mota-Engil) discussed how engineering, innovation, and collaboration across different sectors are essential for building more efficient, sustainable cities that are prepared for future challenges. In another session, Carolina Sampaio Dinis, representative of the EIT community in Portugal, shared opportunities for European funding, pilot programs, and partnerships for innovative urban solutions, analyzing concrete pathways to test and scale solutions within the European context.

The event concluded with a startup showcase, in which the startups SmartRoads, LoopSense, and WazePT, along with the incubated startups Chainreactor and Blocshare, presented their solutions and projects related to the future of cities, sustainability, and urban innovation.

Green x Engineers Innovation Day demonstrated that building the cities of the future requires environments capable of connecting engineering with innovation, the public sector, and entrepreneurship
